coral-bleaching-turtleScience Pub Series #15 – Our Changing Ocean (SOLD OUT)

Join us for an Orange County lecture in honor of Earth Day by Dr. Katherine Mackey, who will talk about causes, consequences, and solutions to current problems affecting the earth’s oceans. Dr. Mackey is the Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine.

The ocean covers over 70% of Earth's surface and performs many functions that are vital for regulating climate within the Earth System. Yet, the ocean is also sensitive to human-caused changes in climate, including sea surface warming and ocean acidification. These issues threaten marine ecosystems, intensify extreme weather events, and lead to sea level rise, all of which affect human economies. In this talk, we will explore some of the ways the ocean has responded to global change, and how we think it will respond in the future.

This event is now sold out. Thanks for a great response.

Dr. Mackey’s research focuses on understanding how photosynthesis shapes, and is shaped by, biological, chemical, and physical processes in the ocean. She leads a large, dynamic lab of talented graduate and undergraduate students who work together and share a passion for research, teaching, science outreach, and promoting diversity in academia. Mackey was named a Simons Foundation Fellow in Marine Microbial Ecology in 2018, among many other awards. She received her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Stanford University in 2010 and completed postdoctoral research at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
