A devastating earthquake hit Turkey and Syria on February 6. The first earthquake registered as 7.8 and second one as 7.6 on a different fault with a different epicenter, both were closely followed by numerous aftershocks. The death toll in Turkey surpassed 44,000 people in 11 cities. More than 18,200 buildings in Turkey have collapsed, 50,000+ were heavily damaged and inhabitable. As bodies are retrieved from the rubble of demolished buildings in many areas search operations have come to an end.
Aid groups say children need immediate shelter, psychological support, education, and permanent homes.

On February 7, Nancy Hammerman, PMD69 (1995), reached out to her classmate Nuzhet Atabek, PMD69 (1995) and she was relieved to hear that he was safe. The second question Nancy asked Nuzhet was: what is the best organization you believe is delivering aid to those in need? The answer: https://bridgetoturkiye.org/

Nuzhet agreed to reach out to the HBS and Harvard community in Istanbul and gather a group to describe how this tragedy has impacted the most vulnerable, especially children. Hundreds of children in Turkey have been orphaned by the recent earthquakes.

So how can we help?

Please join Nancy, Nuzhet and his colleagues for an informative discussion on how the children are affected and what actions you can take to help today. Here’s what you can expect from the first-hand accounts of our panelists:

  1. Emergency survival, safety, health/medicine, shelter, nutrition
  2. Recovery: schooling, K-12 education, teachers, students, parents
  3. Organizations making an impact locally

We look forward to seeing you there!
