Harvard Speakers Bureau: Jonathan Grindlay (SOLD OUT) – Discovering Stellar Black Holes in our Galaxy
Jonathan (Josh) Grindlay is the Robert Treat Paine Professor of Astronomy at Harvard and has been Chair of the Astronomy Department twice. This talk will answer your questions about black holes (with pictures), and how we discover “stellar” black holes.
These black holes are about 5 to 10 times more massive than our sun, but smaller in size than Los Angeles! They appear as bright, but brief, transients (new stars) on the approximately 500,000 Harvard glass plate images of the full sky taken by Harvard telescopes from 1886–1992, and first analyzed by the “women computers,” described in Dava Sobel’s The Glass Universe.
