Stars’ first ever Community Summit is a city-wide convening of community stakeholders around the crisis of closing the achievement gap. This event is free to attend and will include refreshments.

The keynote speaker is Lybroan James EDM ’13 of STEMulate Learning, who has embarked on a mission to promote and develop a love of math as the foundation for student success in the STEM/STEAM fields. Their experience in providing inquiry-based, culturally relevant and life-affirming instruction has helped students and instructors transform a fear of math into a love of the subject, which has recently dramatically increased the standardized test scores of students of color within the Riverside School District.
This is sure to be a training relevant to everyone who works with youth and we hope you can make it!

Lybroan James attended UCLA where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics/Economics and a Master of Education from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. Having taught for fifteen years, Mr. James saw the inequities in educational opportunities which ignited his passion to support the most underserved, disenfranchised group in public schools- young students of color. Mr. James designs and presents curricula and trains teachers on how to effectively instruct students of color. His company STEMulate Learning addresses common core state standards (with an emphasis on STEM) and issues of equity, cultural competence and student engagement. STEMulate Learning helps teachers and students engage in rigorous math development in preparation for 21st Century job opportunities, infusing music, humor and storytelling to communicate abstract concepts and problem-solving skills.
