This roundtable will explore the current status of climate change science, action toward solutions, and directions the world is headed.  They will compare the goals in the recent Paris Accord with the path necessary to reduce and manage the worst risks of climate change.  They will emphasize the way that new science sharpens the focus on the seriousness of the climate challenge, while also highlighting compelling opportunities for solutions.  In particular, they will discuss emerging evidence on:
  • changing climate extremes, from heat waves to flooding
  • risks of complex impacts on societies and economies
  • prospects for an energy system  based on 100% non-emitting technologies
  • finding triple wins at the overlap of sustainable development, reducing climate change, and building resilience

Chris Field is the founding director of Carnegie Science's Department of Global Ecology and Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies at Stanford University. His widely cited work has earned many recognitions, including election to the US National Academy of Sciences, the Max Planck Research Award, and the Roger Revelle Medal.

Katharine Mach is a Senior Research Associate at Carnegie Science’s Department of Global Ecology. Her research is generating new possibilities for assessment of the risks of climate change, to empower decisions and actions in a changing climate.
