Harvard goes to Comic-Con! Join us along with the Harvard Club of San Diego for a networking breakfast with special guest author Amy Chu HBS ’99 and Darryl McDaniels. Ms. Chu and Mr. McDaniels will be on hand to discuss their careers and sign (and sell) their books.

Rapper and comic book creator Darryl McDaniels, of Run DMC, has created a brand new Darryl Makes Comics comic book, written with Poison Ivy's Amy Chu and drawn by Chew's Rob Guillory and GI Joe's Larry Hama. With the character DMC who Darryl has written and drawn in a number of Run DMC comic books, a superhero alter ego that fights crime in 1985 while sporting a fedora, shades, tracksuit and Adidas sneakers.

About Amy Chu:
In 1989, Amy Chu received dual degrees at Wellesley College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology for East Asian Studies and Architectural Design, respectively. She was in Hong Kong from 1995 to 1997 running the Macau tourism office. Returning to the United States, Ms. Chu attended Harvard Business School for her MBA in 1999. In 2010, Ms. Chu started Alpha Girl Comics when she and her friend, Georgia Lee, discussed the lack of female voices in comics. Ms. Chu took a course in creative writing and developed her interest in comics writing from there. She has continued to focus on the lack of representation of women in the comics industry speaking on panels at comic events. She published three collections of short stories under Alpha Girl Comics titled Girls Night Out from 2012 to 2014. Several were funded through Kickstarter, as well as in 2017, a remaster and collection of all three volumes into paperback format. Ms. Chu has been writing Red Sonja for Dynamite Entertainment since late 2016. She also started working on Dynamite's KISS in 2016. Ms. Chu took over writing duties for Dynamite's Green Hornet beginning with the 2018 run. Ms. Chu was recognized as a cultural leader of the year for 2018 by the Corea Image Communications Institute and said she had plans to write a comic in Seoul.
About Darryl McDaniels (from historymakers.com):
Darryl “DMC” McDaniels was born on May 31, 1964 in Harlem, New York. He graduated from Rice High School in Manhattan in 1982, and enrolled at St. John’s University in Queens, New York. In 1982, McDaniels formed Run DMC with group mates Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell. In 1984, Run DMC signed to Profile Records under the management of Russell Simmons, and released their first album, Run DMC. That same year, the group’s music video “Rock Box” became first rap music video played on MTV. In 1985, Run DMC released the King of Rock album. They became only the second rap group to appear on American Bandstand, performing the hit “Jam Master Jammin.” In 1986, Run DMC released the critically acclaimed Raising Hell album, which was their top selling album, reaching certified triple platinum status. Raising Hell featured the popular song “Walk This Way,” a cover of the 1975 Aerosmith single of the same name. In the same year, Run DMC became the first rap group to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and the first rap group to perform on Saturday Night Live. The group followed their success with albums Tougher Than Leather in 1988 and Back From Hell in 1990. In 1993, Run DMC released Down with the King, and after an eight year hiatus, Run DMC released their comeback album, Crown Royal in 2001. McDaniels released his first solo album, Check Thugs and Rock N Roll, in 2006. McDaniels co-founded The Felix Organization, a nonprofit focused on children who grow up in the foster care system. In 2009, he and Run DMC were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. McDaniels authored an autobiography entitled King of Rock: Respect, Responsibility, and My Life with Run DMC, and a memoir entitled Ten Ways to Not Commit Suicide. In 2014, McDaniels created the comic book publishing imprint, Darryl Makes Comics. Run DMC became the first rap group to be awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
