From dating apps to marriage counseling, workshops on human relationships are more popular than ever. Whether it’s navigating new love, healing after breakups, or building stronger connections, there seems to be a session for everyone.
But one critical relationship often goes unexamined: the one we have with media. We are constantly engaging with new “partners” like social media, AI, apps, and the ever-present selfie. In fact, many Americans now spend more time interacting with screens than with people. What are the implications of this shift? And how do we move beyond surface-level use to a deeper understanding of these media forces shaping our lives?
Two of the most insightful thinkers on this topic were Canadian scholars Harold Innis and Marshall McLuhan. In Wisdom Weavers, Tom Cooper AB '73 explores their lives and ideas, offering not only twin biographies but also meaningful reflections on how their work can help us understand and perhaps even reshape our media relationships today.
