Juliann Wolfgram, Lecturer on Art History at Caltech, will discuss “A Nation Ascendant: Aesthetics of Might, Politics, and Faith in Ancient China.” Artwork is frequently categorized as either religio-philosophical or secular, with style transcending both issues. Materials used by artists were chosen for specific reasons that may include issues of durability, cost, malleability and symbolic content. This talk will address the uses of medium as an aesthetic marker of style symbolizing socoi-political patronage, religious doctrine and the visual culture of the rising power of the Chinese empire in the ancient world.

Cost: $10 per person (includes museum admission)
