The Harvard Alumni Association Speakers Bureau introduces Dr. Andrew Berry, Lecturer on Organismic & Evolutionary Biology at Harvard: “What Darwin Didn't Know: Evolution since The Origin.”

Born in London, Andrew Berry has a degree in zoology from Oxford University and a PhD in evolutionary genetics from Princeton University. He was a Junior Fellow at The Harvard Society of Fellows, and is currently a Harvard Lecturer on Organismic & Evolutionary Biology.

At Harvard, he co-teaches courses on evolutionary biology, genetics, the development of evolutionary thinking, and the physical basis of biological systems, as well as a Harvard study abroad summer program at Queen’s College at Oxford.

Since 1859, when Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, huge advances have occurred in the scope of our biological knowledge. Darwin could not even have dreamed of the kind of high tech analysis of genomes that today is routine in academic biology labs. Has his thinking, then, been eclipsed by modern biology? Combining the techniques of field biology with those of molecular biology, Dr. Berry has searched for evidence at the DNA level of Darwinian natural selection. He will highlight some of the ways in which Darwin's theories have become richer and more complete as biology has progressed, and will conclude that the remarkable robustness of Darwin's theories stems in part from his laudably cautious and careful approach to science.
