welcomes you to a lecture entitled:
Mirroring Korean Art in the 19th Century: Foreign Accounts of Korean Art
Please RSVP to eaac@lacma.org or 323 857-6528 by March 24.
In the intervening years between 1876 and 1910, foreigners traveled to Korea and wrote about their journeys, some of them providing keen observations of Korean art at this critical moment of modernization. To date, these writings have not been addressed in art historical scholarship about Korean art. Virginia Moon, assistant curator of Korean Art, examines what forms of art favored were privileged by these writers, and what Western-derived systems of artistic judgment they mirrored against as they introduced Korean Art to Western audiences. In holding a mirror up to Korea at this time, Moon makes the case that these reflections are critical to understanding the larger historical movement that under-girded the modernization of Korean art.
