If Democracy requires an educated populace, then what happens in our schools should be among the nation's major concerns. The Harvard Club periodically provides a forum to explore these issues in education with roundtable discussions, one of which will talk place Oct 11.

In recent years issues that have arisen to be solved or shelved have been the canon---what are we teaching? modes of learning--how are things being taught?  evaluation--how can we be sure things are actually being taught? Questioning these issues has  sometimes brought innovation and solution, as 20 years ago the new formulation of multiple intelligence by Howard Gardener '65 then became integral to pedagogy. Though the canon and modes of learning will always be studied, the current issue of contention, evaluation, needs decision now--what are students learning? How can we judge teachers? Who is responsible?

Come to a pot-luck luncheon Saturday, October 11 at the home of Priscilla Heim and present your views. To start us off JoAnn McKenna '65, educator and innovator herself, will discuss the interesting new book Building a Better Teacher by Elizabeth Green.

Join the Harvard community on that day and become engaged in the conversation!
