Location: Thayer Hall at the Colburn School: 200 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles 90012
This Silverstein-Walden Duo presents an electrifying program of music for violin and keyboard instrument that examines the relationships of avant-garde twentieth-century Italian composers Salvatore Sciarrino and Niccolò Castiglioni to experimental seventeenth-century music of the stylus phantasticus by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli, and Francesco Rognoni. In borrowing and adapting the very structures, special effects, rhythmic motives and techniques of variation, imitation and dissonance that made these seventeenth-century works so radical, the twentieth century composers represented on this program draw links to their musical ancestors that dissolve the distinctions between what sounds “old” and what sounds “new.”
Where: Thayer Hall at the Colburn School: 200 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles 90012

Biography:
Since 2012, the Silverstein-Walden Duo has captivated audiences throughout Europe and the United States with performances that challenge conventional concert programming by forging new connections across four hundred years of repertoire for violin and keyboard instruments. Their recent performances have included recitals in Germany, England, Finland, and the US at venues including King’s College Chapel (Cambridge, UK), the Sibelius Akatemia (Helsinki, Finland) and the Berkeley Early Music Festival (US). Highlights of their 2014-15 season include a recording of the complete works for violin and piano of Franz Schubert on period instruments from the Cobbe Collection (Surrey, UK), as well as recitals in Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Boston and New York.
Violinist Elicia Silverstein is distinguishing herself on the international scene with nuanced, bold and insightful performances of repertoire ranging from the 17th to the 21st century. Performing on both historical and modern instruments, she has appeared as a soloist throughout the United States, Europe and Canada and has performed chamber music with artists including Robert Levin, Ani Kavafian, Paul Neubauer, and Bonnie Hampton.
Silverstein is a 2014-15 Brighton Early Music Festival young artist and was previously the recipient of a Netherlands-America Foundation Fulbright Grant, which enabled her to pursue her master's degree in violin performance and early music under the supervision of Vera Beths, Lucy van Dael and Anner Bijlmsa at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. She plays on a Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume violin crafted in 1856 and a Carl Friedrich Pfretzschner baroque violin from 1796. Please visit www.eliciasilverstein.com for more information.
