Photosynthesis is the most important bioenergetic innovation in Earth's history. It dramatically increased global energy production and transformed Earth's cycles. At the same time, this new source of oxygen created tremendous biological change and evolutionary diversity. In this talk, Dr. Fischer will present diverse observations from genomes to the ancient rock record about how this process emerged billions of years ago and transformed the planet - including how knowledge of photosynthesis helps in the development of solar fuels to meet society's energy needs.
Dr. Woodward Fischer received his PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University. His laboratory studies the coevolution of life and Earth surface environments using field geology, petrography, geochemical measurements of field samples and the molecular biology of selected organisms, providing insight into ancient geobiological processes.
Seating is limited. Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
