ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Jamiere Abney
Jamiere Abney is Director of Admissions at Western Oregon University (WOU), leading the daily operations and
enrollment strategies for the Office of Admission. He is in the first few months of this new position that
has returned him to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Jamiere is a 2012 graduate of nearby Willamette
University. He began his higher education career at his alma mater in 2014 with the Undergraduate
Office of Admission.
Prior to this role at WOU, Jamiere was the Associate Dean of Admission and Coordinator of Outreach for
Opportunity & Inclusion at Colgate University. In that role he lead Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
strategies for the admissions process. Through his leadership, Colgate enrolled its most diverse first-year
class in its 200-year history in the Fall of 2021.
A first-generation and Pell-eligible college graduate, Abney has sought opportunities to be a reliable
support for young people seeking achievement and access to opportunity. Jamiere built on this goal,
earning a Master’s in Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2017. He has been a guest
on multiple podcasts, including Black & Highly Dangerous and On the Mic with Ray White, hosted by
fellow Willamette ℅ 2012 alum Raymond White. Currently, Abney is a candidate for a Doctor of
Education (EdD) at the University of Pennsylvania, studying in the Higher Education Management
Program.
Jamiere calls Albemarle, NC his hometown. Both his mother and younger sister still reside there.

Attorney Shapiro is a frequent volunteer attorney at First AME Church’s free legal clinic in Los Angeles, CA, and at the Freelancers Union/Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts NYC pop-up legal clinics in Brooklyn, NY.
Attorney Shapiro serves as the Vice President of the Harvard Black Alumni Society, is a founding member of Harvard Alumni Entrepreneurs - SoCal, and is an active member of the Harvard Law School Associations of LA and NYC.
Attorney Shapiro received her JD from Harvard Law School and BA from the University of Southern California. Attorney Shapiro is licensed to practice law in New York, California, and Pennsylvania.
